Sing with Reading Phoenix Choir
Reading Phoenix Choir is a friendly, inclusive group of singers who are committed to our high standard of music making, our diverse mix of choral repertory, and our annual season of about twelve public performances. The concert season runs from September to July each year.
Rehearsals take place at South Lake Primary School, Woodley from 7.45 to 9.55 pm every Monday during term time. There is always an additional rehearsal directly before a concert.
As a choir, we work together to learn most of our music ‘by heart’, and we sing these pieces of music from memory in our concerts and other public events. We sing the majority of our music in a mixed position where we stand next to someone of a different voice part, so you have to be able to confidently sing your part on your own.
Our buddy programme supports new members to learn the repertoire, understand how we present our concerts, and build up the confidence and experience to perform with us. Sight reading skills are useful but not mandatory, however a basic knowledge of what a musical score represents is essential, The enthusiasm and passion from the choir – combined with the energy and talent of our Musical Director, Christopher Hann – makes it all worth it.

The choir has vacancies in most vocal parts, but has an immediate need for Tenor-1 and Bass-2 voices.
How to Join
Please contact us at any time to ask about membership. Maybe you have recently moved to the area and are looking for a great choir to join. Perhaps you sing in a small choir and would like to stretch yourself, or you might just want a change from performing Handel’s Messiah every year!The best way to find out whether Reading Phoenix is for you is to come to one of our concerts or to one of our open rehearsals. At the start or each term we hold an open rehearsal where anyone who is interested in becoming a member can come along. You can join us to sing existing pieces, learn new pieces, and get a feel for the choir and wether we're right for you. Open rehearsals will be advertised on the home page of this website and elsewhere.
If you wish to join the choir, then you will need to pass a short audition (it's not as scary as it sounds!) where Chris will gently assess your vocal skills and voice part. Should there be spaces, and if you meet the standards, then there will be a membership subscription cost which is currently £234 for the year (which can be paid as £78 at the beginning of each term).
