About Reading Phoenix Choir

About the Choir

Through our passion for the music and the joy of a capella singing , the choir takes great pride in delivering highly memorable concert performances for our audiences.

Going to a Reading Phoenix concert is a musical journey that explores the full range of a capella music from early to contemporary; sacred and secular, serious and light. What lifts our performances above other choirs is that we perform 'off-copy' with all the pieces being sung from memory, plus we sing in mixed formation to achieve the best aural balance. With no copies to distract away attention and a pure focus on vocal delivery, this results in producing live, exciting and moving music of the highest standard.

Reading Phoenix Choir has members of all backgrounds and ages with a a variety of musical experience - but all sharing a love of singing and performing choral music.

Concerts and Tours

The choir enjoys a busy season of concert performances at venues mostly around the south of England. Other popular events include our annual showcase concert at the Reading Town Hall, the carol concert at Reading Minster - plus a 'Come and Sing' event which is open to all singers. Please check our events calendar for these popular concert dates.

A major highlight for the choir members are concert tours further afield. For example In April 2018 the choir toured northern Spain and performed concerts in stunning historical cities and locations, including Salamanca Cathedral. As part of our 50th Golden Anniversary season the choir enjoyed a weekend tour away in Herefordshire and the opportunity to sing in Hereford Cathedral.

In the Community

The choir also hosts and supports singing workshops to both young and old - fulfilling our commitment to bring the joy of making music to as many communities as possible. Find out more about singing workshops for your school or community group.

New & Recorded Music

The choir has long been committed to commisioning and performing new music. This commitment has been enhanced through the Walter Hussey Composition Competition, which is run by the choir and  has recognised new composing talent from across the world.

The choir regularly makes recordings - whether ad hoc  performances on Facebook Live or fully produced recordings that are released on Spotify and YouTube.
